Dear Log Cabin friends:
The north wind doth blow --- And we shall have snow - (and snow, and snow)
A week ago the north wind blew in an angry storm that left a foot of snow
covering our prairie & much of the Midwest and bitter cold temperatures
followed. Winter started early & before it was officially suppose too
- a joke on us from Mother Nature, but I wasn't laughing. It changed so
many plans. There was no school for 3 days, almost unheard of anymore, in
these days of global warming. And we reluctantly canceled the Woolkeepers
Christmas party but knew we had to when everything was a sheet of ice and
snow. We were all disappointed but it is important to be safe and warm on
nights like we've been having. And now we are assured that proverbial white
Christmas at the end of this week, plus another angry storm is forecast
with substantial snows by Christmas day. This may be "the" winter
of record snows.
The birds are easy to see on the white blanket of snow. The woodpeckers,
finches, cardinals & bluebirds & others, are being well fed &
watered during this difficult time for them. We enjoy watching them close
to our window - a simple country pleasure.
"December is the Cold Moon or Full Long Nights Moon. During this month,
the winter cold tightens its grip, & nights are at their longest &
darkest. It also is sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long
Nights Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is
indeed long, and because the moon is above the horizon for a long time".
- The Farmers Almanac
We were greeted early one morning by "sundogs" when we peered
out our front door. It's seldom we see them but the light & snow crystals
were giving us a" show" in the sky. It was truly amazing to see
& I hope many of you had the opportunity to witness it.

Sundog is left & Sun is on the right
It has been a very busy year for the groups that meet at the Log Cabin.
And of course, being this busy made the time fly by quickly - it's hard
to believe the year is almost over. The appliqué clubs are half done
with their Cabin coverlet designed by Maggie B. We are doing it as a Block
a Month (BOM). Woolkeepers groups continue to hook up beautiful rugs &
the Herb Study group I started 2 years ago is growing & we are learning
so much. The final project of the year for the Log Cabin was the cookbook
called "Hook & Cook" which is "hot off the presses."
It was a group effort & turned out really well.
Thank you for another year of friendship here at the Log Cabin & I wish
for you good health, joy, peace and love in the New Year. Holiday Blessings,
Twila, Cabin Keeper at The Log Cabin

CHRISTMAS JELLO SALAD
(This recipe has been in Sue H. family for many years & her mom always
fixed it for Christmas)
| 1 cup diced celery | |
| 1 cup black walnuts (see my notes below) | |
| 1-3 oz. cherry jello | |
| 1-3 oz. lemon jello | Mix all together, refrigerate. |
| 3 c. boiling water | |
| 1 can whole cranberry sauce | |
| 1 med. can crushed pineapple with juice |
(My note: I made this for the first time & we loved it & it will
become a family favorite also.
Sue's Mom always used black walnuts as they were readily available here
in the Midwest - all one had to do was pick them up as they fell to the
ground, let them dry, remove hulls & pick out - a job to do but they
are so good & free for the picking up & picking out. I used chopped
pecans instead. One note: if using a lg. can of crushed pineapple cut water
back to 2 cups. Thanks Sue, I love old family recipes).
