Dear Log Cabin friends;
Summer and July 4th already! It seems like I just planted the garden, and grandkids got out of school, & the year is half over! And by the time you get the next newsletter, since Im combining July & August letter, well be thinking of autumn already! I hope you have wonderful plans for the summer. Theres so much to see and do, near and far. Sometimes our own surroundings offer the very best with simple country pleasures close to home.
I have just returned from an inspiring 3 day workshop, out in the Kansas countryside, with a delightful teacher/mentor. I feel one cannot learn too much- & we must constantly be learning in life. Someone once said if we are not taking a step forward, we are taking two back. It keeps life interesting & positive, especially when surrounded by others who are learning & growing too. My 3rd quarter of life is an especially wonderful time to learn & not stand still and do nothing more. Life is so good & full of great things that all we have to do is look for them!
July finds me starting to pick & dry the lemon balm, mint, oregano & other herbs while they are at their peak. Vinegars, tinctures, & infusions will be made from the fresh herbs, others dried. The weeds (those little plants that are out of place in my garden) have threatened to take over with all our wonderful rains we have had this year. So I am out in the garden politely asking them to find some other place to grow & they just wave to me in the summer breeze & I smile & leave them be for another visit later. I enjoy wearing my handmade hat, with 6 inch brim all around, that my daughter gave me & I carry my antique flower gathering basket to the garden heaping it high & thanking each herb for growing so nicely & sharing themselves with me. Another simple country pleasure here at The Log Cabin. THIS herb/flower gathering basket that I use will NOT be selling in my shop as Ive sold several others & then found myself without one :-) . It is my favorite kind of basket to take to the garden. (Ill take a picture and share it with you next letter).
Julys full moon is called the Buck Moon and Augusts full moon is the Green corn Moon. The corn field, next to my vegetablegarden, is now (July 2) taller than I am. My dad used to say knee high by the 4th of July as a way of measuring corn growth but with all our rains the corn is taller than we have ever seen. I must watch that the little grandsons dont go into the field or wed lose them for sure. Do you ever remember as a child hiding in a corn row not too far in, but just far enough in so no one could see you? A simple country pleasure as it was like being in your own private forest.
In August Ill be making pesto and freezing it in ice cube trays to be used in the winter. The blueberries will be in season & I will freeze them for winter also. And then with the next letter well be thinking ahead to September. We have no classes during the summer at the Log Cabin, but with autumn well start once again.
Enjoy the simple country pleasures of a wonderul summer season. Twila, Cabin Keeper at the Log Cabin
