Dear Log Cabin friends:

Happy May Day!

I love driving up my country lane to the scenes of spring - truly a simple country pleasure. The wheat field behind our home is a beautiful spring green that’s always moving gently in the wind. The six crab apples show color, and the two redbuds are now blooming, along with the three large forsythia’s exuberant yellow. I planted another 60 tulip bulbs last fall with clumps of them in the berm, around the house and in my view from the screened-in porch. This year, for the first time, the deer discovered all the gourmet food around my home and proceeded to munch every bud off as well as the daylilies level with the ground. These were mighty hungry deer and they left their hoof prints all over to tell me exactly who did it! We have many rabbits too & have fenced them out pretty well. During the winter we can look at the snow covered field behind our home & count over a dozen deer at any one time so we know they don’t live too far from us. Anyway it was a disappointment to find my tulips gone. My mom had visited the day before & I showed her the tulips ready to burst into bloom, & now all that’s left is a clump near my shop door, so I am enjoying THOSE pink tulips more than ever. The peach tree in front of Log Cabin Inn was grown from a seed & is in full bloom. It is now 10 ft. tall & covered in pink blossoms – quite a sight. The wild plums are blooming in the country ditches near my home with their fragrance wafting our way with the wind. We’ll have all 4 grandsons staying with us this weekend so they will go with Grandpa to get a bouquet of those white airy blossoms for Grandma & create yet another memory.

I want to plant some wild plums along the back of our acreage, as the county cleans ditches out regularly, (much to my dismay!) taking away what makes Nebraska roadsides so pretty. (I think they could find something better to do with their time & don’t understand the logic behind it - just leave the wildflowers and the bushes for the wildlife).

It’s time to get in the garden and yard but the spring rains come just in time for the weekends. I did get the potatoes and onions in and hopefully will get more cool weather crops in the soil in a few days. The Log Cabin won’t be open as many days in May as it is time for everyone to be outside more. Classes are almost over & we saw many of you in our classroom having fun creating. May reminds us to take time to smell the flowers, watch the birds do their nest building, & the bees gather nectar from the dandelions as well as a good month to open the windows wide.

Enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Blessings & a beautiful month of May to you all, Twila
