Dear Log Cabin friends:

It’s October 31st, but it doesn’t seem possible that November starts tomorrow & we are almost at the end of the year – again! Time does fly by when we are busy - & everyone is busy these days.

Mother Nature gives us perfect Halloween weather with leaves blowing off the tree’s, & stars glittering in a black sky. I’m sure there will be a chill in the air making it perfect for the little people trick or treating. We’ll look forward to our oldest grandsons (age 10) stopping by. Grandpa is usually hiding close by, making a scary noise, but it doesn’t scare them much at this age, & we all have fun. I’ll be at the front door to greet them with goodies & hot chocolate.

It’s the last days of October & we’ve had a frost, but not a hard freeze to my knowledge anyway. This weather has been beautiful & predictions are for the rest of the week to be nice. Could it be possible that these nice days might just continue to Christmas? It certainly gives us all a chance to get more work accomplished, inside and out. I picked a big bouquet of sage from the garden today – and it’s as pretty & aromatic as if it were the middle of summer. I’ll dry it in small bunches, but a cup of fresh sage tea will be made first & enjoyed on the screened in porch. The temperature is almost 70 as I write this on Monday of Halloween week.

This morning we had a flock of bluebirds enjoying the birdbath & I could just imagine them saying to each other “We REALLY should think about heading south.” I smiled as they fluttered in the water together & then flew to a nearby tree to dry off. We’ve had as many as 10, bathing or perching nearby, awaiting their turn to bathe. What a simple country pleasure- & I believe there isn’t a prettier blue than the feathery coat they wear.

Enjoy the wonderful days of November. Have a great Thanksgiving & we will all count our blessings in life – especially our family and friends. –TWILA

LOG CABIN INN OPEN!

Yes, we are open for business (as of Oct. 1st) & already it’s been booked twice! The Voice News (reaching over 100,000 people in our area) had a wonderful story on our Bed & Breakfast in the Oct. 25th issue. ( reprints in the shop). If you would like to view Roca Log Cabin Inn, we’ll have it open on Sunday, Nov.4, 4:30-6 p.m. & on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 6-7:30 p.m. Stop out and say “Hello” & please pass the word that we have this available. We would greatly appreciate it.

(This is the little cabin to the north of our log cabin home that used to be my shop before I moved to the courtyard level).

WOOLKEEPERS

Notice – the dates for 2 groups, instead of one – a letter will be forthcoming with explanation.

HERB STUDY GROUP

Jo D. gave a presentation on Oregano – she had several different ones to show. Claudia had lemongrass to give away, and Diana R. showed her pottery.

I gave a short talk on Costmary. We are learning so much.

HERB CALENDARS ARE HERE! These are available for purchase. If you know someone who enjoys herbs, this would make a wonderful Christmas present, or even a Hostess gift. Get one while they last!

FALL IDEAS

If you have a hurricane (glass chimney) that you’ve been using for a candle, remember you can fill that hurricane with just about anything besides a candle. I like the looks of little gourds for fall, and could be pinecones for Christmas – that is if you aren’t using it for a candle J

We have the large oval bowls – a favorite decorating look of mine. These can be decorated for every season or just used to hold wools pieces, or kitchen wooden tools.

Have you seen our candle hanger? I use these indoors and outdoors. They are WONDERFUL!- so if you haven’t seen one, ask about them when you stop by.

PUMPKIN BARS

This is our all time favorite – everyone loves these!
2 c. sugar & 1 c. canola oil, Mix well
Add 4 eggs, one at a time
Add 2 c. canned pumpkin
Add 2 c. flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. soda, ½ tsp. salt

Bake in a 12x15 baking sheet pan (with sides) at 350 degrees for 20 minutes
Let cool and frost.

FROSTING

1 stick butter, melted & browned to a caramel color (watch closely)
Add to 3 c. powdered sugar, 2 oz. cream cheese, 2 T. milk, ½ tsp. vanilla

Frost the cooled pumpkin bars and sprinkle with finely chopped pecans.

THE LOG CABIN SHOP – A CELEBRATION OF EVERYTHING THAT’S OLD BLENDED WITH A FEW NEW DISCOVERIES & A GATHERING OF HERBAL TRIMMINGS & NEEDFUL THINGS FROM THE GOOD
