Dear Log Cabin friends:
It's October! My favorite month of the year - I love fall and just can't
get enough of this month. The weather is cooler, the colors of pumpkins
& bittersweet brighter & the smells of crackling fire in the fireplace
for the first time of the season just comfort our souls. I think of hot
cider stirred with a long cinnamon stick, putting vines on the mantle along
with a garland of gourds, candles burning & taking time to leaf through
a favorite book (Like the Seasons book).
The geese will soon be migrating across the sky & I love to hear their
squawking as I bid them farewell until their return again. The trees are
beginning their annual change of colors & I like to collect a few leaves
& press them to keep a remembrance of their colors - a simple country
pleasure. I'll wait awhile to put the garden to bed, as we are still picking
tomatoes & green peppers, & the last ones will need to be put into
green tomato relish before the black killer frost takes them. My son has
already put in his order for the piccalilli (green tomato relish) that he
grew up on.
And the closet will get an overhauling while I put away the summer clothes
& the sweaters come out to warm us on chilly days. It is a month that
I call a "comfort" month - warming up, getting cozy inside &
thinking about hot chocolate nights & chili soup days.
Our oldest grandsons (twins) will celebrate their birthday this month -
turning 10 years old. It just doesn't seem possible that they are 10 already.
They are good readers, & like karate, basketball & football.
This is the month of the "Hunter" Moon. Have you ever thought
how much bigger the moon looks in the fall than any other time of year?
Perhaps it's just the crisp nights & darkness of the countryside that
make it appear fuller. Take time to stand outside & gaze at the moon
when it is full & round - another simple country pleasure I love to
do.
Yes, I found THE "unique" pumpkin this year - & many of you
all loved it too. I had quite a few in the shop but they have sold out now.
I'd never seen any like them - very country/primitive looking. We have a
few bittersweet wreaths, a wonderful dated l857 blanket chest/trunk, a red
old paint counter top desk, a wonderful 12 tin pie safe, old textiles &
smalls just brought back from an outing. The "Must see" new country
book of private homes has arrived as has a line of new & wonderful primitive
photo cards.
It's been a busy time of year, two new rug hooking classes are in progress,
the new group of "Folk Horse" rug hookers has begun & our
2nd class of primitive appliqué will be Oct. l6.
Take time to drive out to The Log Cabin, certainly a simple country pleasure
this time of year, & say Hello, & see our new/old things. We'll
leave a light on.
Happy October! Twila, Cabin Keeper
