Dear Log Cabin friends;
Fall is in the air! We know September can be quite warm here in Nebraska but I am looking forward to the autumn season, my favorite of all seasons. I walk the ditches & roadsides gathering natures gifts & find the snow on the mountain in great abundance. The goldenrod is ready to burst into bloom & the garden centers are full of mums in all colors, shapes & sizes. I put my gatherings (either from the roadsides or my country garden) in an old brown crock. The crock is wonderful with a little chip (none of us are perfectJ) but it has a wide opening at the top, big enough to slip in a skinny quart jar to hold the water & protect the old crock. I always add 1 tsp. sugar to the water & it helps the flowers last longer. Its just another one of those simple country pleasures for all of us to enjoy. A peak at the wild plum bushes reveals no fruit a result of our late spring freeze. September is the month of the CORN moon, a sign that the farmers will soon be harvesting their crop.
Summer will soon be just a memory. I love the summer too but the humidity I could do without, & memories of our Colorado summers & dry air are still fresh in my mind.
We enjoyed our sun-kissed grandchildren this summer & we had many projects planned. They are growing up too quickly to suit me. The picture included in this letter shows them all together at the childrens museum in Lincoln, a wonderful place to take children, but they (and their grandma!) were quite tired by the time the picture was taken.
They had fun making cement stepping stones here & they decorated them every which way, their name & the date was included. Grandma Bo gave us a sack of old costume jewelry that 2 of the boys had a ball with they couldnt believe that she used to wear the clip- on earrings because in their words they really hurt my ears.
They enjoyed the big inflatable pool that went under the tallest slipper slide on the large swing set in our backyard. It made for huge splashes! Handy grandpa made actual steps going up to the tree house so the 4 yr. old grandson could join the big boys, & grandma could enjoy it with them! (In fact its a wonderful place to escape to for an hour with a good book-I know this for a factJ)
A simple country pleasure of September comes with the annual hunt for the elusive pumpkin; you know the one that is just right! The pumpkin doesnt have to be perfect but I do love unique! So-o-o I am out hunting & every year a different pumpkin strikes my fancy. When I find THE PUMPKIN Ill just know its the right one & Ill have it on display in the shop (on days Im open) for all to see; but its place of honor will be in the center of my big old farm table in my kitchen.( We hope to have fresh bittersweet in the shop too once again).
My home is decorated with what I call pioneer country just a mix of old things that give me pleasure to be around. These old things are seen as comforting to the heart & soul & have lasting power without going out of style. It is definitely a style of its own. I particularly like old painted pieces & believe it is important to bring things into your home that nurture you things that mean something to you all the while we are preserving history. We brought 5 neat pieces of furniture back from our last buying trip & they all sold within 2-3 weeks. The 2 piece cupboard was the sweetest thing & I knew it wouldnt last long in the shop, as well as the shaker looking work table with great lines to it.
There are many things planned in the shop in the next two months. Most of the classes lined up are already full. Special events also are being planned such as our Courtyard sale on Sept. 15 and a fall decorating session in October. Stop by to hear what other things are being planned. There will be no fall or Christmas open house but we will have some new/old items in for the seasons.
Celebrate the simple country pleasures of September like finding your own unique pumpkin, & lighting one of our Log Cabin candles. Well leave a light in the window. Blessings, Twila- Cabin Keeper at The Log Cabin shop.

HERB STUDY GROUP
Cynthia & Diana gave a great presentation on BASIL, our honored herb
of the month. For those of you who cant attend the group, I have a
sheet of recipes if you would like to pick them up at the shop (just ask
for them). We learned so much about this herb that everyone should plant
it in their garden each year. (Im making the pesto & basil vinegar
a simple country pleasure for sure).
Next Herb study group meets 4th Tuesday evening, Sept. l8, 6:30 9 p.m. & Sondra B. presents the topic on Lemon Herbs. We may also do a short session on herb vinegars. Must register to attend if new.

A FALL PROJECT
Select your favorite fall leaves & dry them. Place each leaf between 2 pieces of wax paper. Place this leaf sandwich between 2 pieces of brown paper & iron on low-med. heat. The wax paper will stick together & encase the leaf. You may trip it to shape of leaf. These look great around a pumpkin, stuck in potpourri or one could write a name on them as place marker. (With help of an adult, this is a neat project for children too).
