Dear Log Cabin friends

IF WE HAD NO WINTER, THE SPRING WOULD NOT BE SO PLEASANT!- Anne Bradstreet

It’s March – what can we say? It’s the “in-between” month that comes between winter and spring & Mother Nature hasn’t decided which way to go. I’d love to help her out! This has been one LONG winter & by this time of year we NEED to see green & flowers blooming, but we’ll find the patience & wait for April to arrive. The geese are honking their way north now, robins are in the backyard testing the weather out, and we’ve had the bluebirds scouting for their new home. The tulip bulbs are awakening from their winter slumber to push their way to the sunlight – simple country pleasures in March. So with the new month of March there comes hope, especially for springtime.

AFTER NIGHT, AND SPRING AFTER WINTER. – Rachel Carson

We went to Tennessee in mid-February to attend 3 large antique shows. The weather was great on the day we took a side trip on the edge of Smoky Mt. Nat’l. Park. It had been a very long time since we’d been to this area, but we rekindled our love affair with Cade’s Cove Nat’l. Park and log cabins. The little clearing of land, amidst a forest of trees, offers an 11 mile loop to drive around & is an old l814 settlement that grew to 700 residents. The weather was 62 degrees, no wind, & a perfect spring day as the forsythia were blooming, grass was green, and the daffodils, which grow wild there, were ready to burst into bloom. We viewed several log cabins & old churches, as well as the grist mill. The cabins were built next to bubbling brooks and were wonderful. One day this settlement will no longer be there because of disrepair & age, but for the time being it is wonderful to see & know about the history of the area. And we got a “taste” of springtime when in Cade’s Cove. However weather wasn’t too cooperative during antique show time, but it was a special time nonetheless, because we met our close friends Kathy & Jim who came from Washington state (her home is in the new Country Sampler Home tours issue) And then back home to Nebraska & an ice storm to remind us that it is STILL winter on the prairie.

March is a busy month at the Log Cabin, with the groups meeting again after winter, and classes beginning. We missed being away the month of February & the shop was VERY busy last Saturday when we re-opened. It was so nice to see you all again. Orders are coming in each day & we have some special things to look forward to. Come out & visit, and we’ll leave a light on just for you.

NOTES & NOTED

--We have the CHINA BAYLES BOOK OF DAYS in shop now – if any have read the series of books by Susan Wittig Albert you will know what this is. I enjoy each day I turn the page & learn something new.

--We still have a few Herb calendars left at sale price. I love the idea that’s listed on a March day, to put a sprig of mint in wallet to attract money! There is lots of “sage” advice (about sage) on April’s calendar page.

--Want to learn to over-dye wool for your rug hooking or appliqué. Put your name on a list now.

--New country book coming to the shop in June – AND WE ARE IN IT! (More about it in May letter)

--Look for items NEW to the Log Cabin.

--If you missed the wonderful big cupboard & the coffeetable drawer unit at the shop, you’ll know those items were SOLD quickly, along with many smaller items. It pays to check us out often.
